Wheatsville Food Co-op South

Austin, TX

Serving the central Austin community since 1976, Wheatsville Food Co-op recently opened its second storefront to serve residents on the city's south side with its fresh fare of natural foods. The 25,000 sf full-service grocery store, which provides a new anchor for an existing shopping center, features a full-size commercial bakery that supplies fresh baked goods to both Wheatsville stores. Also integrated into the new market is a commercial kitchen/deli for both in-store dining and catering as well use as a ‘teaching kitchen’ for classes and group gatherings.

Wheatsville South participates in the City of Austin's Green Building Program, which led to its exclusive use of LED lighting fixtures on the sales floor, along with installation of 50 solar tubes and large skylights to bathe the interior with an abundance of daylight. In addition, a sophisticated daylight sensing system has been integrated to trim the use of artificial light when adequate daylight is available to illuminate the store floor.
